Monday Morning Musings

It's Monday morning, 5:56am, and I should still be asleep, but I am up thinking.

As of this moment, I am 11 days away from turning quarter of a century. People keep telling me it's not old, but I am not convinced *giggle*. I'll be reflecting a lot over the next few days, but one of the things I thought about (and wanted to share) was the idea of  goals.

Monday Morning's

I don't think I've ever found a more accurate portrayal of me in the mornings, than this little girl right here.

I found this video on Tumblr and could not stop laughing! I've hated mornings since I was her age. At least I know that I am not the only one *Giggle*

See the video after the jump.

Out And About: Caribbean In New York

OUTFIT DETAILS: Jumpsuit: Forever 21; Kimono: Torrid; Wedges: Torrid; Earrings: Street Vendor;
Necklace: Forever 21

Summer is winding down in NYC which means it is getting cooler! However. in July, most days were unnecessarily hot!

One day, my friend Lisa and I decided that after days of hiding under the A/C, we should venture out into the sun and pick up some vitamin D. We visited a great caribbean/southern restaurant in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. I ordered spicy shrimp, mac and cheese, and candied yams and Lisa picked the jerk chicken, plantains and mac and cheese. Talk about delicious! To beat the heat, I picked mango lemonade and she got the home made fruit punch. By the time we finished, we were in heaven!

How are you enjoying the summer? What's your favorite season/why?

Out And About: Singersroom Presents Lydia Caesar and Ro James

Thursday night, I attended a show powered by Singersroom.com, at the Brooklyn Aloft hotel, featuring two of R&B’s amazing up-and-coming artists: Lydia Caesar and Ro James. It was hosted by former Bad Boy artist, Cheri Coke (formally Cheri Dennis).

Ro James performed songs off his mini EP ‘Coke,’ (which is too good!); while Lydia performed a mixture of songs (including a cover of Rihanna's 'Stay'). There were a lot of people from NYC’s cool crowd; Luke James (currently on tour with Beyonce), one of the Coco and Breezy twins, and rapper Driicky Graham (“Snap Backs & Tattoos”), to name a few.

I had a great time!

OOTD: Wedding Day 'Fit

THE DETAILS: Dress: Alfani; Shoes: Target (similar); Jewelry: Unknown

Weddings are a beautiful occasion. I don't attend many, so I was a bit unsure of what to wear to an evening ceremony/reception. After raiding Macy's and finding absolutely nothing, I remembered this little gem was tucked away in my closet. I love the peplum and gold buckle detailing. It's so classic yet sexy! My second favorite thing about this look are my shoes! Merely because I only spent 30 dollars on them at Target #SCORE!

Personal Thought: Black In America

I grew up reciting the pledge of allegiance and the line, "with liberty and justice for ALL" with passion. As a child of immigrant parents, those words MEANT something to me. Now as a 24 year old adult, I am unsure where my faith should lie. On the heels of the now infamous Trayvon Martin/Zimmerman "not guilty" verdict, I am filled with more emotion than I know what to do with. So much so, there's a sense of numbness... possibly to help my body cope.

I have watched social media and have seen the various thoughts, arguments, and opinions of people young, my age and older. White, Black, Latin, Asian. There are those who believe that the verdict was right and those who believe the verdict was wrong. I don't mind either opinion because this country stands on the belief that we can have a difference of opinion and still coincide. What is truly bothering me is the people screaming (or typing) that this case had nothing to do with race.

Minorities are not sensitive; we are realistic. Me, a 24 year old young black female; skin as dark as a Hershey bar, body as thick as mud, and cum laude college grad has been plagued by what the curse of my melanin means in this country. I have walked into stores and been followed while my fellow non-colored shoppers roamed freely. I have been accosted by my white counterparts, stood up for myself, and been deemed "the angry GHETTO black girl". I have been told, "you have too much 'sass', you should try to tone it down to fit into the workplace." I often ask myself why we are targeted and the only answer I can come up with, that makes sense, is that it is an underlying subliminal didactic to people of color; being black in America comes with a certain level of responsibility. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it is a fact.

We have the burden of carrying the perception of "our people" placed on our backs. Everywhere I go, I am cognizant of that. I am sensitive to the fact. I know and understand this is how it works, but that doesn't make it right.

When I think of Jordan Davis, Brandon Pettiford, Kendrick Johnson, Oscar Grant, Sean Bell, Rekia Boyd, Amadou Diallo, etc.; I think of all the times we (not only black people, but citizens) held our breaths for justice that never came. I hoped that with a case as Trayvon Martin's, I could tell my little 16 yr old brother, "look! When we take a stand, we are heard" in lieu of my disappointed tears. To say that race was not a factor would be to deny the very fundamental struggle that the legal system is built upon in this country. Zimmerman saw a young black male walking in a community he deemed was not his own. Was that not profiling? He disobeyed orders to stand down, pursued, and began a confrontation with an unarmed minor. The minor was shot in the back (a sign of flight). Where the jury found reasonable doubt, I don't know. This is not the only case like this. Trayvon was lucky enough to receive media coverage.

Our community is failed by the legal system time and time again. We wait for the justice we are told must come, but see it only applied against people that look like us, creating trauma on the psyche and a nasty cycle. The Zimmerman trial has made people feel like we are not worth much to this country. If we let history tell it, a dog's life (Michael Vick) is now worth more than an unarmed black teenager. If this is the lesson our legal system would like us to walk away with, the progression of this country has taken a terrible turn. What do I tell my 16 yr old brother? How can I look him in the face and tell him he is safe, when now more than ever, I fear for his life? Moreover, why should I feel the same way mothers, sisters and wives felt in the south 60 years ago when have supposedly made strides?

I respect the penal system, but I think we need to look at the idea of race, how it (legal system) treats us and how we treat one another.

Summer Style: Turbans

Me, Summer 2013
I wanted to share one of my go to summer looks; I love rocking turbans! It's the easiest thing to do when you have no idea what to do with your hair. Turbans are a lifestyle for some people, but within the last few years, it's become a pop culture phenom. Everyone from "regular" girls, to style mavens like June Ambrose, Beyonce, and Solange have been spotted in these chic wraps. I know I titled this "summer style", but truthfully, I wear it all year round.

A Little Love From London

I mentioned in my last post that I'd had eye surgery and was recovering from that... well, would you believe that last week I fell in the train station and bruised my tailbone/strained my neck?! Talk about when it rains it pours... The ER doctor recommended painkillers and rest. All in all, I'm taking it with a smile. Actually, after the initial embarrassment, I did find it funny. Well, that was until my butt started hurting *Giggle*!

Anywho, in all the madness a cousin from London came to visit and brought me my favorites!

I got a box of English tea and syrup waffles. If I could do a backflip... I would. But I can't.

OOTD: Black, Leather, With A Pop Of Pink (Rihanna Inspired)

A friend and I went to Ruby Foo's, for dinner, in Times Square on Friday. I knew that we'd be doing lots of laughing, so I wanted to look cute but low-key. Who does that look better that Rihanna herself; she was my style muse for the night.

After some awesome food and drinks, we decided to hang out in the crowd of people that often packs 42nd street. While walking around, we saw a singing Korean choir, Batman, Spiderman, Woody/Buzz Lightyear, and some street art.

Sometimes, I forget how awesome my city can be.

March Madness: Enerjiee On BET and Ok! Magazine

I know it's well into April, but if you have not "Liked" the Enerjiee Facebook page, I wanted to share two exciting things that happened to my eyewear line, Enerjiee.
First, BET's annual fashion presentation, Rip The Runway aired and I saw the mint Monroe's on a runway for the first time. Bonus? It's also on the Rip The Runway model homepage and look page!

The Oya frames made onto the pages of OK! Magazine in late March/early April. Right under Miley "Twerk Team" Cyrus and Giuseppe Zanotti; that was a surreal moment. Feel free to pick up a copy if it's still available!

What do you all think?

Sunday Inspiration: No Victory Without Struggle

Sunday Inspiration has been gone for a minute but i'm bringing it back for a second.

I graduated college almost 2 years ago and have yet to land a permanent job. I did all the right things; I interned at various places to build a nice resume, won my college thesis competition, and graduated cum laude. If you asked me in June of 2011 if I'd be here today, I would laugh without a care in the world. Fast-forward 7 internships, a temp gig, 1 year, 10 months, and 3 days later and... I'm not laughing.

Now, along the way, there have been many people who have offered me "advice".

  • "Why don't you just get a city job?"
  • "Just take anything until you find what you're looking for!"
  • "You know it's a recession, stop being picky!"
  • "Have you applied [insert something completely out of my field here]?"

At first I would get upset with people. I mean, how can you give me such terrible advice?!
Then, I reasoned  these people were giving me the suggestions they deemed best for my life. So instead of being mad, while they talked, I would daydream about unicorns. No, seriously, I would.

After a while, you get to a point where you ask yourself, "What the hell did I do wrong? Is everyone else right? Did I go to college to apply for a city job?" It can really take a toll on you.

Fortunately for me, I have always been a big dreamer and have never been afraid to go after whatever my "it" may be. Coming from a family of immigrants and being first-generation American, the juxtaposition between the two cultures can really teach you the meaning of perseverance.

I saw the above picture when I was deciding to start Enerjiee. I questioned myself because who really starts their own business with virtually no capital, no safety net, and no idea if it will work. After I read the quote, I knew I was on the right path. Nothing great has ever come without struggle. I believe in purpose and timing. If it isn't your purpose and it isn't the right timing, no matter what you do, you will not force the hand of the universe.

We all have our paths to walk, mine happens to be filled with struggle in the beginning. As difficult as it may be, I will not be aligned with mediocrity. I will devote myself to the idea of being GREAT. I will fight for it, I will cry over it, but I will not forget it's my dream. I'll make it happen and I want all of you to do the same. There is no victory without struggle.

What's your dream? How have you/will you make it happen?

Review: Dermablend Professional's Smooth Indulgence Concealer

I got this Dermablend Professional Smooth Indulgence Concealer, in Spice, in my February Brichbox. I gave BB the side eye because with deep/dark skin, you can't just throw concealer (or foundation) on. There's a certain method that goes into the madness of picking these things. I put it on my hands and it made me look ashy so I threw it to the side. After a few days I decided to try to make it work...

Article Feature: Sereine Magazine Talks "Enerjiee" With Sherine

Yesterday, my line Enerjiee, and I, were featured on Sereine Magazine as the "Career Woman Monday" feature. This is my first write up so I am beyond excited. Check out some excerpts from the interview and the CLICK HERE to read the full story!

On why I started Enerjiee:
"I was born with a lazy eye and as a kid growing up in Brooklyn; I had a difficult time accepting my “flaw”. I started wearing sunglasses every day after my 2nd surgery in 7th grade and by the time I got to college (3 surgeries later), eyewear was a part of me. The initial concept of Enerjiee was born when I started embellishing eyewear in college (out of boredom) and then I met someone who made it an actual career; I was fascinated! About a year later, I interned for that same designer and realized that I had fallen in love with designing and didn't want to look back. That’s how Enerjiee was born!"
On the piece that describes me and Enerjiee:
"Honestly, it’s the simplest one out of the bunch: Monroe. I have always been the kind of girl who loves classic beauty (Coco Chanel’s one of my favorite designers), but I never liked boring. Ever. Monroe is a mixture of classic and edge; a little bit of “I’m a lady” and a little bit of “f*ck you!” That’s me and that’s Enerjiee *wink*"
On the difficulties of being a new brand on the market:
"the biggest challenge has just been bringing my line to the awareness of others. I want my accessory line to be at the forefront of people’s thoughts when they think of accessory brands. I spend a lot of time just researching designers/boutiques/publications and reaching out. Some respond, a lot don’t, but all you ever really need is that one shot. I believe it’s coming for Enerjiee and it’s coming swiftly. I hope I’m ready."

What do you think about the interview?
